Known as the "living laboratory of evolution", this archipelago is made up of 13 main volcanic islands, 6 smaller islands and 107 rocky islets. Galapagos Island was believed to be the first to have been formed due to a continental drift that happened 5 to 10 million years ago. It is famous for its vast number of endemic species and studies conducted by Charles Darwin which led to his postulated theory of development by natural selection.

Blessed by a bountiful fauna wildlife thriving in their rich aquatic formations, snorkeling in Galapagos will always be a delight to any water enthusiast. Here are three of the main islands in this archipelagic location that you should not miss hopping into.

* Floreana Island
The sixth- largest in area, Floreana has three northern coast visitor sites for a superb experience of snorkeling in Galapagos. First is Post Office Bay which is just a small beach but has white sands. It has a makeshift barrel adorned with a rustic yet international decoration. Located nearby are remains of a canning factory, lava tunnel, swimming pool and soccer field. Second stop is Punta Cormorant, this is bay is on a brown sand bed which is tinted green due to its composition of olivine crystals. It is inhabited by sea lions and crabs where with just how many meters walk, it will take you to a promenade overlooking a flamingo lagoon. Lastly, the Devil's Crown which is the remains of a half- submerged volcanic cone. Upon entering the water on the outside of the rocky crater, there are many white- tipped reef sharks, turtles and rays that can be commonly seen.

* Genovesa Island
This may not be always part of the 8- day cruise itinerary but Genovesa should be visited if you want to have a grand moment of snorkeling in Galapagos. It has two main tourist destinations namely Darwin Bay and
Prince Phillip Steps. Darwin Bay has a .75 kilometer trail pass towards the mangrove patches that is frequented by land birds as well as exotic species such as nazca boobies and swallow- tailed gulls. As you go further, playful sea lions are at sight. In Prince Phillip Steps, as you trek for one kilometer, it will lead you inland through Palo Santo vegetation. It is a nest for colonies of seabirds and short- eared owls. It is also home to the island's endemic doves and swallows.

* San Cristobal Island
Lying on the extreme southeast coast, San Cristobal boasts of its only freshwater lagoon and captivating beaches where it is truly a haven for snorkeling in Galapagos. It provides an interesting socio- environmental element that is not found in the other islands. It has a gallery of colonial architecture and organic coffee plantations. You can also get involved in local politics in the provincial capital of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Tourists can reach the place by an airplane from Baltra or by boat from Puerto Ayora.

Summary: The best Hawaiian snorkeling sites can be found on the island chain of Hawaii.

Surrounded by miles of crystal blue green and emerald waters with matchless diversity of aquatic life, the Hawaiian Islands just beg to be explored. If you have seen the pictures you will be amazed. If you have been there you will still be amazed. How much amazement you will get if you haven't been there or even saw those stunning pictures bought by friends who've been there?

The best Hawaiian snorkeling sites can be found on the island chain of Hawaii. Comprised of the six islands, the main island, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai, has unquestionably some of the most diverse and spectacular underwater experiences for the visitor to the Islands, making it the best Hawaiian snorkeling experience this maritime oasis's oceanic wonders can offer.

Some of the most endangered species are found on the seas and beaches of Hawaii, that's why the government placed effective measures to protect these species and their habitat. And the result? The best marine ecosystem you can see, unparalleled anywhere. The Hawaiian sea turtle, some of the rare coral species, dolphins, angel fishes and a myriad of exquisitely colored tropical fishes makes these waters the best Hawaiian snorkeling destinations ever.

Oahu and the Hanauma Bay
Many reefs off Oahu are teeming with fish and have elaborate coral formations. Examples of such reefs would be on the North Shore at Haleiwa. In addition to beautiful reefs, one can almost always find schools of dolphins off the leeward coast at Waianae.

What makes Oahu spectacular is the Hanauma Bay where 450 diverse marine species made their home. For this reason, Hanauma Bay is a protected marine sanctuary. As long as you respect this fragile but breathtaking ecosystem, Oahu and the Hanauma Bay could be your best Hawaiian snorkeling experience yet.

The Garden Island of Kauai
The oldest of Hawaii's major islands, this north-westernmost island is also called the "Garden Island" for its lush and vibrant vegetation. The Garden Island is also the home to more sandy beaches than any major island in the chain.

The best Hawaiian snorkeling could also be found on Kauai and its many protected lagoons and coral reefs are home to hundreds of species of fish, one third of which are found nowhere else in the world. Since Kauai is millions of years older than the other inhabited islands in the Hawaiian island chain, Kauai has by far the most protective reef lagoons and therefore some of Hawaii's best snorkel spots.

The vast labyrinths of pathways that intersect its wide fringing reef are the most probable reasons for you to visit Kauai. Sea caves and half submerged waterfalls are natural water wonders even casual snorkelers will be amazed. This shallow reef is interspersed with narrow, sometimes cavernous canyons. The variation in undersea terrain makes for exciting explorations and an ideal home for a wide array of reef life.

The best Hawaiian snorkeling in Maui
Maui is the activity spot of Hawaii. Majority of charters and snorkeling packages can be found here. Natural formation, ancient shipwrecks, and the Olowalu Turtle Reef teeming with abundant marine life makes Maui an old time favorite for best Hawaiian snorkeling activities.

The Molokoni Crater Natural Reserve is a popular site for snorkeling expeditions around Maui. This is a shallow geological formation, circular in shape, as its name implies.

With an average of 350 days of sunshine, 150- 250 feet of underwater visibility, 200- 500 yards of coral reefs and warm 80 plus degree year round sea temperature, what an incredible moment to have snorkeling in Cozumel.

A popular tourist destination, Cozumel is an island off the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Yucatan Peninsula which is opposite of Playa del Carmen in Mexico. It is a flat mass of land based on porous volcanic rock. It also has a number of endemic species such as the splendid toadfish.

Great is an understatement to describe what it is to go snorkeling in Cozumel. Its limestone shore is surrounded by temperate, crystal clear waters that range from striking turquoise to deep indigo. With that there are many spots in the island that is conducive for another thrilling splash escapade.

* Chankaanab is ideal for those beginners who desire to go snorkeling in Cozumel. It is a must to head to the wonderful coral formations, stroll their one- of- a- kind botanical gardens, witness the dolphin show and visit the museum.
* Santa Rosa is best for those who are in the intermediate level. It has a spectacular wall dive which is hands down popularity winner on the island. Hundreds of meters away is a good location for snorkeling in Cozumel because it has tremendous variety of marine life. There is also San Francisco, Punta Tunich, Tormentos and Paso del Cedral which will give a reward of dense fish population and richly colored reefs that require challenging technical requirements.
* Palancar is the most famous place for snorkeling in Cozumel. It is world- class with mountainous coral formations that will catch your eyes. The marine life is nothing short of spectacular. It has four entrances to the reef system namely the Gardens, the Horseshoe, the Caves and the Deep Zone.

Here are some friendly tips when you plan snorkeling in Cozumel:
1. By cleaning the mask, first is to get it wet, spit into it and spread the salive around using your fingers. This is to avoid from any fogging.
2. See to it that your hair is tied so as not to have any strand trapped under the mask's seal. When it happens, it will cause the mask to leak.
3. When water enters the breathing tube, sharply blow through it to expel the water.
4. If the water will get inside the mask, breathe in through the snorkel and out through your nose. At the same time, press the top of the mask against your forehead.
5. Do not go into the open seas alone. Always bring somebody with you. This is to avoid any kind of dangerous accidents like you might have cramps or problems with your gear.
6. Sandy beaches are great to have a suntan but not for snorkeling. It would be advisable if you stick to the coral and rocks to see much more of the sea life.

The indigenous Arawakan- speaking Taino settlers named this place "Xaymaca" which means the "land of springs". It is 240 kilometers in length and 85 kilometers in width that is situated in the Carribean Sea. The geographical location itself need not to be expounded why a lot are a left dazzled when snorkeling in Jamaica.

It has a tropical climate with both hot and humid weather albeit, inland regions have a it more temperate. Some of the regions found on the southern coast such as Liguanea Plain and Pedro Plains are relatively dry with rain- shadow areas like the rainforests.

Montenego Bay is definitely the perfect spot for snorkeling in Jamaica while the Doctor's Cave Beach features one of the most accessible areas. For those who are brave enough, head straight to the channel to discover the Coyoba, Seaworld and Royal Reefs. Each of those are sated with wildlife such as the barjacks, blue- brown chromis, yellow- headed wrasses and spotlight parrotfish. Just make sure that you have an expert with you because it is getting deep and current are rough.

Here are handy tips for those who wish to go snorkeling in Jamaica:
* Be very conscious of the currents and keep watch at all times of where you are heading. It will not be very easy to head quickly to the shore when you are too far away while snorkeling in Jamaica.
* Do not bring any food for feeding with you. There is really a possibility that they will envelope you to the extent that you might not take it and something might happen. This is just to avoid any kind of accidents because it will end up spoiling your vacation.
* Never walk or stand on a coral reef. Those have been protected with utmost care. Tread carefully as well on shallow waters because there might be sea urchins. It would be wise to wear slippers or swimming shoes if you are really serious in going snorkeling in Jamaica.
* Put away all your accessories. Don't you know that Caribbean fish, especially barracudas, are drawn by shiny objects? When they can spot you wearing one, you seem like a silver fish which is their natural prey. You don't want to attacked, do you?
* Sharks are rare to find and those that can be spotted are usually passive. When you go snorkeling in Jamaica and they are just around the corner, keep calm and if necessary, move slowly out of the water. You can also remain stiff as you wait for them to vanish.

Snorkeling in Jamaica offers a unique aquatic experience especially for those who are water enthusiasts. You will get to explore the Carribean marine habitat at its very best.

Former US president George Bush fell in love with what this has to offer. Searching for the hard-to-pin-down bonefish is one of his favorite activities to do. It has a famed coral reef that extends miles into the ocean that is both feeding and breeding grounds for hundreds of aquatic species.

* Marathon
Called as the "heart of the keys", Marathon truly lived up to its appellation. It started out as a bustling fishing village in the early 1800's and has already developed into a metropolis sated with malls, hotels and restaurants. However, this has not lost its charms of being a great spot for snorkeling in Florida Keys. It is home to Key Vaca, Duck Key, Boot Key and Grassy Key which have an abundance of sea creatures. There are manatees, tarpoons, trouts, groupers, snappers and other kinds.

On this corner is a dwelling of chain of coral reefs. Key Largo is legendary for its lore of pirates and sunken treasures which makes it very popular for snorkeling in Florida Keys. It is known for its excellent water visibility with John Pennekamp State Park as its lead diving destination. It is abode to more than 600 species of psychedelic tropical fish and 40 bright types of corals. It is protected by the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary.

Sergeant majors. Yellowtail snappers. Blue tang. Stoplight parrotfishes. Immature blueheads. Four-eye butterflyfish. Peacock flounder. Damsel fishes. These are just few of the many exotic sea creatures that you will see as you go snorkeling in Grand Cayman.

The largest of the three Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman is about 196 square kilometers wide. It is a low- lying limestone reef with an elevation of 60 feet above sea level. Since there is no natural fresh water in the island, any that can be potable must undergo catchments or desalination.

Snorkeling in Grand Cayman will never be just-another-kind-of-activity because it is abundant in biological spots that can make you fall in love with any underwater adventure. Here is a guide of some of the great locations for your next trip in the summer.

* Turtle Farm in West Bay
The Turtle Farm's Miniwall is good for snorkeling in Grand Cayman. It offers the best views close to the shore right in the entrance and on "the lip" of the miniwall. You can see tons of juvenile fish, octopus, soft sponges and sea fans. The area is also well- known for its school of huge parrot fishes. Some are two- feet long where you can hear their "crunching" noise as they are being fed off the coral reef and ocean floor.

* Cemetery Beach in West bay
Aside from being recognized as a superb location for snorkeling in Grand Cayman, the Cemetery Beach is also perfect for those who want to achieve that sunny look. They have huge Australian Pines that provide plenty of shade on the shore for a whole day. It also has a rich aqua sanctuary and when you are brave enough, you can swim together with the Cayman Piranhas. They are known as Sergeant Majors who will literally swarm you for a morsel. Better yet, you can choose to go with somebody who will bring a food and watch him being enveloped by those fishes.

* Wreck of the Gamma in George Town
Wreck of the Gamma is an old freighter that crashed against the beachfront. The damage is still visible but it is now crumbling from rust. When you go in this area for an experience of snorkeling in Grand Cayman, it will just be conducted "around" rather than "over". It has been a haven for lots of fishes and you will be able to see those different species within just a very small area. The nearby shoreline is also home to beautiful coral formations.

* Paradise to Eden in George Town
The many short caves abounding is a favorite for those who go snorkeling in Grand Cayman. They get to feel that they are totally being covered by an underwater nature. Paradise to Eden sits a few yards away from the shore. The bottom can get 30 feet deep which brings you closer to the formation that rises up from 10 feet of water. Fish feeding is also popular where you are like jumping in a big aquarium.

Occupying an archipelago of 322 islands with some 522 islets, this Southern Pacific nation boasts of its world- class tourist destinations. It has shallow waters packed with exotic sea creatures and natural coral reefs where even the first- timers who go snorkeling in Fiji will absolutely have the grandest moment.

With the many beautiful spots where you can have snorkeling in Fiji, it would often be confusing on which to choose. However, you can always opt to go around especially if you have the luxury of time. If not, then you can simply head to the beach front of your hotel, jump in the water with your snorkel equipment and you will be taken aback by what your two eyes can behold.

There is never such thing as a bad day to go snorkeling in Fiji because the sea is always clear coupled with such a warm weather. For those who are really serious about the activity, it would be advisable that you ride a boat. The country has many charter companies and many of which can accompany you to the most distinguished sites. Take for example the Somosomo Strait, it features miles of attractive soft corals and thousands of colorful fishes.

Here are four top locations for a superb experience when going snorkeling in Fiji:
* Taveuni
Sometimes called as the "Garden Isle" with its spectacular landscapes, Taveuni is known as one of the finest diving areas in the entire South Pacific. This is not for the neophytes because you might be frightened by its depth. This is a reward for the experienced where it has a 20-mile- long rainbow reef including tropical fishes beyond count with sharks, manta rays and snakes. It also has plenty of topside attractions like the traditional villages adorned with ferns and orchids laced with hundred of waterfalls including a number of curious collection of native birds.

* Vanua Levu
Because this has largely been undeveloped, Vanua Levu has maintained its basic charm. Over a hundred miles long, it is good foundation for adventurous souls who want the best of both worlds, be it in land or water. It is perfect for rainforest hikes, bird watching and snorkeling in Fiji. With a rugged island interior and green fields of sugar cane, is much like that of a scene in the aloha kingdom of Hawaii. In the Savusavu Bay, it has pristine blue waters for fine windsurfing. It may not have much visitors but lately, there have been new small but luxurious resorts that sprung up in the recent years.

* Viti Levu
The largest among the other islands, Viti Levu has somewhat been overlooked by many who are eager to hop on to the yacht and proceed to the nearby spots. It may not be so much of a beach getaway but the finest hiking, surfing, rafting and snorkeling in Fiji can still be very much experienced. It is even possible to have a taste of the metropolis life in its capital, Suva. You can have a choice to visit the museum or stroll in the market.

Located 15 miles south of Saint Augustine that borders Pellicer Creek down to the Matanzas River is a designated canoe trail in Florida. Faver- Dykes State Park is a popular site for bird- watching, nature tripping, summer camping and outdoor picnic.

Aside from all of those activities, it is also as great snorkeling in Faver- Dykes. It has such a pristine condition with an aquatic preserve where you can see the abundance of marine life. Both saltwater and freshwater species can be caught like the red drum, black drum, sheepshead, spotted seatrout and common snook. There are also huge mouth bass and bream that comes closer to the headwaters of the creek.

After snorkeling in Faver- Dykes, you can trek the one half mile loop. One trail begins nearby the picnic location and heads along the pine flatwoods into the scrub. Another is set in the camping ground where it leads to the hardwood hammock. There are also park boundary and back wood roads that you can choose for hiking. However, you need to make arrangements with the staff for you to enter.

You can also opt to see the flying animals because the park has more than one hundred bird species especially during the spring and fall migrations. There are songbirds, wood warblers, eagles and falcons that return to their nests each year. Wading egrets, wood storks, white ibis and kingly herons feed in the tidal marshes.

This Florida state park is also an abode to deer, turkeys, hawks, bobcats, foxes and river otters. It is such an interesting place to visit where there is even an abundance of trees, shrubs and wildflowers. When you travel down the unpaved park drives under a canopy of live oaks, there is a covered resurrection of fern and green- fly orchid. Some rare plants grow including the Indian pipe, spring coralroot ad Florida coontie.

If snorkeling in Faver- Dykes is not much of your thing, you can choose to go canoeing. The tributaries offer a charming venue to observe the flora and fauna wildlife. They can be rented even for advanced reservations.

Picnicking is also an alternative for those who are not into snorkeling in Faver- Dykes. It has all the facilities that you need to complement with those al fresco plans. There two covered pavilions with other tables and grills that are located all throughout. The site has a close proximity to the creek that affords a short- walk to the fishing dock. It is located under a canopy of huge, old with long- leaf pine trees which create a soft- ground cover of pine needles and great amount of shade as you enjoy the clean breeze.

Summary: Snorkeling across the waters of Catalina is the best California snorkeling experience

Snorkeling across the waters of Catalina is indeed the best California snorkeling experience. Those who have come across Catalina's beautiful underwater paradise always vouch for this. The warm tropical waters native to the country and the freezing cold waters from the arctic come together at the Channel Islands to form a unique underwater habitat where more than 1,000 plant and animal species thrive. Swim a couple of yards from the shore and see the superb diversity of sea life, and that's just in the first 60 ft. of depth. Add that to the fact that lowest visibility averages around 50 ft (normally it is higher than 50ft), and you'll start to understand why divers and snorkelers make regular pilgrimages to Catalina Islands.

Santa Catalina Island is part of the eight island chain called the Channel Islands of California or also called the Santa Barbara Island. The Channel Islands is located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California along the Santa Barbara Channel in the United States. In the last decade, five of the islands were made into the Channel Islands National Park, with the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary encompassing 60% of its enclosure. Santa Catalina Island is the only one of the eight islands with a significant permanent civilian settlement–the resort city of Avalon, California.

Lover's Cove is a short walk east from Avalon. This protected marine preserve is an excellent area for snorkeling. Some glass bottom boats cruise there to feed the fish, making the Lover's Cove resident fishes unnaturally tame. So tame are the fishes there that you could actually pat them and feed them by hand. Within easy swimming distance of the Cove, snorkelers can get great views of sea urchins, sea stars and shimmering schools of garibaldi fish that hover close to shore. You can also expect occasional visits from playful California sea lions that swim up from the Southeast Sea Lion Rookery. In the summer snorkels and fins can be rented, and fish food purchased, at the Cove Cooler. Descanso Beach is also a good snorkeling area. They also cater to food, drinks and equipment needs.

Snorkeling Catalina is a mainstay in guided tours for California snorkeling. They offer a 2 hour snorkeling trip package aboard their custom built 20 foot Caribe. This exciting snorkeling adventure leaves daily at 9:00 am, 11:15 am, 1:45 pm, and 4:00 pm and is limited to only six passengers. This California snorkeling package will include Masks, Fins, Snorkel, Wet Suit and some instructions. Prices for adults are estimated around $47.50, $42.50 for children under 13, and $30 for accompanying riders.

Regardless of the fact that this South American country was the first in the world to constitutionally abolish its army, Costa Rica contains 5% of the world's biodiversity. They may not have a military but what an abundance of wildlife. It has been said that their soldiers are the leaf cutter ants, pilots are the macaws and navy ships are the whales.

One of the activities that the country boasts to its tourists is snorkeling in Costa Rica. Its underwater wonders range from coastal coral reefs to offshore islands. They have varied spots that contain diverse beautiful marine life that includes huge manta rays, timid sea turtles, bright angel fish, psychedelic sea slugs, thorny puffer fish, fragile sea fans and a lot more.

With an average water temperature of 75- 82 degrees, between the middle of January and April, those who are interested to go snorkeling in Costa Rica will grasp the true meaning of tropical living. With over 25 sites for any sea getaway, most within a 10- 40 minute boat ride, you will surely want to go back to have a taste of it once again.

* Cahuita
On the temperate eastern coast, Cahuita provides one of the best sites for snorkeling in Costa Rica. With just a small boat, you can reach the giant barrier reefs of Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and Cahuita National Park. The expected visibility is up to 150 feet while the warm waters off the Caribbean side is nearly always over 80 degees.

* Isla Del Cano
Located at the southern Pacific, Isla del Cano offers an excellent view of exotic fishes with a visibility of 60- 80 feet on most days. From the Drake Bay, you can enjoy snorkeling in Costa Rica through a small vessel. The surrounding plateaus and canyons are not as steep compared as that in the north.

* Curu
Cruising from the Montezuma beach, you will be taken to the charming coastline of Bahia Ballena. You will get to see breathtaking cliffs and ancient caves. As you are on your way to Curu, you might even spot dolphins and whales on the sides. The Banana Express is an ideal site for snorkeling in Costa Rica. It is a sunken steamer where you can watch eels, triggerfish, manta rays and many more that will interestingly play with you.

* Isla del Coco
For the ultimate feel of snorkeling in Costa Rica, the Coco Islands remains to be the top choice for serious underwater quest. It will make an eight to ten hour trip from Guanacaste to Coco whose steep rock- walls and canyons provide shelter to an awesome diversity of sea life. The currents can be heavy with a visibility of 60- 100 feet.

* Cabuya
A rare attraction can be spotted in Cabuya where there is a small cemetery a few hundred meters off the coast. When it is low tide, you will surely enjoy just walking the islands over the rocks to come across that peaceful atmosphere with views of the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. The reef on the extreme top is such a real treat for snorkeling in Costa Rica. Without even any gears, the colorful sea creatures can be clearly seen trapped in the rocky tide pools.

Summary: Accompany me as we tour the countries in search for the best dives & snorkeling adventures

Sometimes you just want more than rocks to accompany you with your snorkeling adventures. And on occasion you just feel that these mute creatures could get any better than poking from time to time from their hiding place to see if you have already gone past. Just leave the old eel be and accompany me as we tour the countries in search for the best dives & snorkeling adventures.

Olowalu Turtle Reef
Maui, Hawaii

For those looking for a grand turtle adventure, this heavenly place is the place to be. I would gladly include this trip on our best dives & snorkeling adventures package. Not for the adrenaline pumping, blood curdling snorkeling action but the exact opposite instead. This turtle safe haven is a lost paradise (I'm sure our silent shelled friends here will agree) and a Turtle Preservation Spot. Hundreds of green sea turtles slowly plow their way towards its sandy shore to deliver their eggs. Silent clear water, soft and lush vegetation and even the small aquatic life native to this consider this place holy.

The famed Molokini Crater Natural Preserve can also be found in here in Maui.

Tres Marietas
Banderas Bay, Mexico

Ever ride on the backs of manta rays? Now we're talking adrenaline. Manta rays don't look pretty, they look disgusting. And malevolent. That's the exact reason why we have to ride on one! Tres Marietas is a perfect addition to our best dives & snorkeling adventures. Manta rays, porpoise, whales and turtles Tres Marietas is the perfect uner water Savannah.

Banderas Bay also features another awesome snorkeling spot which is the Los Arcos (translates as 'The Arches').

Shark Ray Alley and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve
Belize Barrier Reef, Belize

The Hol Chan is a natural cut in the reef, about 25-30 feet deep. A diverse amount of marine life and underwater landscape can be found here. But the reason why I included Hol Chan to our best dives & snorkeling adventures flyer is the Shark-Ray Alley. A shallow cut in the reef where snorkelers will assuredly encounter sharks and stingrays. Is petting shark your fancy?

Both Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley are within Ambergris Caye, which is only a small part of the Belize Barrier Reef. Did I mention that the Belize Reef is the second largest reef?

The British Virgin Islands
Caribbean

In the age of sails, pirates and privateers, the seas of the Caribbean are littered with caravels, sloops, galleons and massive barges battling in the high seas for marine supremacy. Today all that remains are the skeletal structures of the once mighty fleets of destroyers. No other seas have a collection of these priceless antiques except the Caribbean. The British Virgin Islands holds the most of them. Ready your salt ridden veins and plunge with me to witness these swashbuckler ships now home to hundreds of marine species.

Summary: Maui is beyond doubt the best place in Hawaii and Maui is as beautiful underwater as it is above. Read on and find the best Maui snorkeling spot

Maui really speaks for itself. Maui no ka oi" means "Maui is the best" in Hawaii and this local motto reflects truly of that place in Hawaii. Yes, Maui is beyond doubt the best place in Hawaii. Lush forest, mountain that offer more than scenic view, and endless stretches of pure white sand beaches with clear turquoise water, a sunny and windy weather that never seem to get foul, Maui had more than made up for that name.

Maui is more spectacular underwater. It has everything the underwater world has to offer and finding the best Maui snorkeling spot is never a hard option. The fascinating submerged terrain, underwater natural formations, distinctive ocher of the corals, and the multitude of wildlife that inhabits its gorgeous submarine landscape all around Maui gives a debatable axiom to 'here lies the best Maui Snorkeling spot' . Dazzling displays of butterfly fish, angelfish, tang, and grunts surround you, with needlefish, flounder, and crabs providing unusual- looking sights are just scattered everywhere. Maui is as beautiful underwater as it is above.

The Molokini Crater Natural Preserve

While some of the crater's teeth are jutting out of water, the rest of the volcano's crater is completely submerged, making the interior crater a complete haven of multitudes of sea life from the tide and other predators. The Molokini Crater Natural Preserve is alive with schools of tame angelfish, touch-me-not puffer fish, butterfly fish, octopuses and even those giant fearful looking manta rays.

The Molokini Crater Natural Preserve can get crowded with boats, snorkelers and divers especially during the summer months so its best to get there early. But there are enough fishes and sight in the crater for everyone to see. Some are so used to people that they can be fed by hand, though this is not advisable. The Molokini Crater Natural Preserve is protected by the government so some restrictions are enforced there.

Molokini is divided into three separate areas that appeal to the beginner, intermediate, and expert divers. Molokini's crater basin affords protected waters and an abundance of sea life, is only 35 feet deep,and is ideal for beginning divers and snorkelers. An underwater wall on the inner area goes to depths of 70 feet for intermediates, and the back side of the crater whose depths of 350 feet call to the intrepid expert divers.

Olowalu Turtle Reef

Olowalu Turtle Reef is very accessible from Maui and also one of the best Maui snorkeling spot frequented by most snorkelers. These protected waters overflow with those gentle and graceful green sea turtles. Here you can see and be amazed at the calm and gentle ecosystem these wayward creatures have made for themselves. These turtles are protected by the law so it is advised to observe them at some distance. The beauty of Olowalu Turtle Reef is taking part of this calm and serene Shangri-La.

Snorkeling is a family affair. Little kids enjoy snorkeling as much as experienced divers do. But they can't just snorkel anywhere right? Even though Banderas Bay or the Great Barrier Reef on the coast of Belize is interesting enough, you can't just allow them to snorkel in its waters. The alternative for these budding young snorkelers are snorkeling beaches.

One bad point for snorkeling on beaches though: beaches intended for bathers have endless stretches of sand. And sand like 'our' sand doesn't support life. That's why tropical beaches, however magnificent they are, would be thoroughly boring to snorkelers. However, there are outstanding beaches that cater the needs of young bathers -and young snorkelers too.

Check out these best snorkeling beaches I have compiled.

Paradise Cove Beach Resort
No other beaches in the Bahamas have the direct access towards the Deadman's Reef. Paradise Cove knows and takes pride of that. That's why Paradise Cove Beach Resort is one of the best snorkeling beaches you can find. A short distance from the beach line would the magnificent Deadman's Reef. And what would one of the best snorkeling beaches have to offer than a coral reef teeming with aquatic life.

Two bedroom villa for $195/day or $1225/week
Fully equipped and just a step away to the beach

P.O. Box F-42771
Freeport, Grand Bahamas Island
The Bahamas
Fax: 242-349-2003

Summary: Banderas Bay snorkeling features two underwater marine parks which are Los Arcos and Tres Marietas.

Banderas Bay measures nearly 20 miles across with over 40 miles of coastline and is considered one of the deepest bays in the world with depths of up to two miles. The waters of Bahia de Banderas are protected from the inclement weather of the open seas because it faces west and is framed by the Sierra Madre mountain range. That's why lots of magnificent beaches surround Banderas Bay. With waters fed from the Pacific Ocean, just snorkeling in its warm and clear waters is enough to make you feel refreshed, and Banderas Bay has these warm waters all year round.

But Banderas Bay snorkeling is not only about the water. There are many things to see within the canopy of its waters. Explore the hidden treasures of its sea while snorkeling or diving in the refreshing waters around Puerto Vallarta. Let one of Banderas Bay Snorkeling Guides take you to secluded coves to view the abundant colorful sea life that lives just below the surface of its crystal waters.

Banderas Bay snorkeling features two underwater marine parks: one of which is the Los Arcos which translates as 'The Arches'. The Arches are basically three underwater rocks that form the small islands. They have a natural tunnel through their centers that has been etched by the tides to form perfect arches over the ocean. These rocks emerge from the ocean's surface just off the small cove of Mismaloya. Thus Los Arcos became a perfect protection for the thousands of marine wildlife, its shelter an abundant ecosystem that aquatic and non aquatic harmoniously exist.

Expect to see gorgeously colorful fishes and coral reefs that thrive in the warm Pacific waters. Enjoy the company of angelfish, parrotfish, blowfish, snapper and even those dangerous but reclusive moray eels. Los Arcos makes for a unique experience because it goes from a depth of 20 ft. on one side of the rocks to over 2000ft. on the other side of the rocks.

Ever ride on the backs of manta rays? You can only do that in Tres Marietas. It is also one of Banderas Bay Snorkeling spots. Tres Marietas mark the entrance between Banderas Bay and the Pacific Ocean. These are a part of an underwater mountain range which peaks above the ocean's surface about 20 miles of the coast of Puerto Vallarta. Because it is the nearest to the mouth of the pacific, expect to meet those aquatic creatures you always see on TV. Manta rays, porpoise, whales and turtles, Tres Marietas provides a perfect sanctuary for these creatures.

The Banderas Bay was comprehensively documented by Jacque Cousteau as he studied the migrating humpback whales that migrate during each winter. These islands provide a perfect sanctuary for the whales and sea turtles that come here to mate and have their babies. In the protected coves of the islands, you can dive into the shallows to snorkel with the masses of tropical fish and coral reefs. If you're lucky, you may even be able to catch a ride on one of the friendly, giant manta rays that frequent the area!
