Champ Car Racing
Champ car racing is a very popular sport in America. The American Championship Car Racing is the major racing tournament and the cars used during the tournament are abbreviated as champ cars. The champ cars are mainly used for the auto race called Indianapolis Auto race. This sport has been sanctioned by authorized sporting bodies like the Auto club of United States, The Automobile Association of America, The Sports vehicle club and the Cart teams. The Champ car racing was the name for a body that held this tournament prior to the year 2003. The organization faced bankruptcy so they switched over to a new format. The name of the organization was CART and the race was called CART racing. The series was officially named the CARTPPG INDYCAR WS (World Series). Before the 2008 season the race was formally renamed as the IndyCar series.
In the year 1905 the American Automobile Association formed the first sanctioned car racing organization. In the year the organization was de sanctioned due to the growth in racing car accidents. The organization was called the Automobile Club of United States (USAC). Till the year 1978 USAC controlled motor car racing but in the year 1979 CART took over the responsibility of managing motor sport racing in America. Dan Gurney took the initiative to form the CART (Championship auto racing teams) and chalked out a blueprint for future plans. Financial matters were also taken into serious consideration. The new format became very popular and became by far the most popular motor sport in America. In the year 1979 twenty major racing events were held and of them thirteen were CART events.
Before the 1990s the CART championship races or champ car racing was mainly dominated by North American drivers like Bobby Rahal and Danny Sullivan. Emerson Fiitipaldi changed the pattern in the year 1989 by winning the champ car racing championship. He had already won a F1 title. Other drivers from South America and Europe started taking interest in champ car racing. Slowly the North American dominance was reduced by capable drivers from the rest of the world. Vancouver. Cleveland, Miami and Toronto are some of the places where this tournament is held.
The name and format of this race had another major change in the year 2002 when FedEx announced that they would no longer sponsor the tournament. So they were on the brink of bankruptcy. The 2003 tournament had been named as the Bridgestone sponsored Champ car racing. After this year the share prices of CART fell heavily and there was a bid for the formation of a new organization. Tony George along with a few CART owners won the bid for taking over the shares. They renamed the sport as the Champ car racing or CCWS (Champ Car World Series).
