Statistics show that kayaking is one of the fastest growing sports/activities in the United States today, with more than one million people already hooked and many more potential enthusiasts looking to join the "club." Kayaking is particularly attractive for the family, because it offers affordable equipment and instruction. Children as young as 4 can safely join in this family experience, a skill and hobby that can be enjoyed throughout a lifetime.

To get started, find the kayak that's right for all your family members. For example, while 4-person kayaks are available, it might be best to split your group into two boats – one parent and one child per kayak. Make sure you also purchase paddles that "fit" each person, as well as appropriately sized life jackets.

Next, determine each person's skill level. If dad's a Level 3, mom's a Level 2 and the kids are all at Level 1, it might be best to enroll in a family kayaking class before heading out.

Decide if renting or purchasing equipment is your best option. Rental rates range from $25/hour to $150/hour, or more. If your family's in it for the long run, average purchase prices start as low as $395 and seem to top at $8,500 for custom built models.

Shared experiences and adventures are part of the glue that binds a family unit, big or small, extended or not. Kayaking for the family is certainly something all members can focus on, because it's healthy (both mentally and physically), presents a challenge and offers a means to set and achieve common goals.
