As the name suggests, winter sports are games and sport activities that are played during the winter season. These specific sports are usually played on snow or ice. There is a long list of such sports. However, the major winter sporting activities include sledding, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, figure skating, ice hockey, etc. Let us give you a brief insight into some of these sports.

Ice skating

Ice Skating is one of the most popular winter sports. Herein, you have to walk on ice with skates. There are two types of skates – with and without special boots. The usual playgrounds for this recreational sport usually include skating rinks and frozen lakes or rivers. There are different types of Ice Skating sports, such as Synchronized Skating, Speed Skating, Short-Track Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Tour Skating, Ringette, Ice Hockey, Bandy, etc.

Snowboarding

No list of winter sports can be complete without the mention of snowboarding. This sport is very much similar to skiing, but it has recreational flavor of surfing and skateboarding as well. Herein, you have to descend from a snow-covered slope on a snowboard. In skiing, you use two skates – one attached to your each foot. In snowboarding, a single skate-like board is attached to both the foot in a boot-binding interface. These winter sports are also played in various forms, such as Slalom, Boarder cross, Alpine Snowboarding, Freestyle Snowboarding etc.

Skiing

Skiing is perhaps the most popular of all the winter sports. Skiing is not a single sport. It is a group of sports in which players use skis. Skis are special sport gear that you have to wear in your feet by attaching the same with ski boots or ski bindings. Many people confuse skiing with snowshoeing and Ice Skating.

However, they are different activities. In skiing, you have to slide on snow. On the other hand, in snowshoeing, you have to walk over snow. Likewise, Ice Skating is one of those sports that are played on ice, such as frozen lake or river. On the other hand, skiing is played on snow – not ice. Some of the winter sports in which skis are used on snow may include Telemark Skiing, Speed Skiing, Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross Country Skiing, Firngleiten, Freestyle Skiing, Nordic Combined, Ski Archery, Ski boarding, Skibob, Skijoring, Ski Jumping, Snowshoe, etc.

Recreational sports

There are some winter sports that are played completely for recreational purpose without any competition, such as ice boating or Ice Sailing, Ice Swimming, Shinny, Building Snowmen, Snowball Fight, Tobogganing, etc. Children often play these sports.

There are several other types of winter sports as well, which may include Skwal, Monoskiing, Snow-Blading, etc. Some of the sports that involve teams include Sledge Hockey, Ice Stock Sport, Curling, Broomball, etc.
